He is a 1981 graduate of North Carolina State University where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering with a concentration in Construction Management. Dean became a licensed General Contractor in 1983 and a licensed Professional Engineer in 2002.
Dean’s interest in the construction field began with a summer job when he was 15 years old. He continued to work in construction during the summers, ran his own small deck building business during college and immediately went to work with a commercial contruction company in Virginia upon his college graduation. The desire to return to being an entreprenuer overcame him and he started Dean P. Edwards, Inc., General Contractors, in January of 1983.The building business has taken Dean from the beautiful shores of northeastern North Carolina to the growing area surrounding Raleigh. He built new homes and completed large remodeling and addition projects in Dare County from January of 1983 to March of 1997. During this time Dean served as Secretary (1991) and President (1992) of the Outer Banks Homebuilders’ Association. He was also the 1991 recipient of the North Carolina Home Builders’ Association “Builder’s Award of Excellence – Grand Award for $175,000 - $300,000 Comtemporary Design” for a home he constructed on Hatteras Island. He has also had one of his homes appear on the national cover of the Homes and Land magazine.
In late 1993, Dean moved his family to the Raleigh area. He continued to travel back and forth from Wake County to Dare County, completing projects in both locales, until March of 1997. Dean still travels at times to build vacation homes for past clients. He has built one such home at Lake Gaston, has one home currently under construction at Lake Gaston and has also completed a remodeling project at Oak Island, North Carolina. However, most of his business is centered in and around the Wake County area. In addition to being a licensed General Contractor and Professional Engineer, Dean is a member of the Raleigh/Wake County Home Builders’ Association, a graduate of the National Association of Home Builders’ Graduate Builders’ Institute and has his NAHB Graduate Master Builder Certification. On a personal note, Dean is married to Robin Edwards, his wife of 24 years, who is an Elementary School Counselor with Wake County Public Schools. He has 3 children; a daughter at East Carolina University, a daughter at Gardner-Webb University and a son at Middle Creek High School. His son is following in his dad’s footsteps and has recently started his own business building picnic tables! Dean is also a member of the Emmaus Community and Hollands’ United Methodist Church, where he and his son play guitar in the Contemporary Praise Band.
